Things That Make Me Happy

As I have mentioned before in this blog, I love reading stories about scientific or medical breakthroughs that seem at first promising but are virtually guaranteed to be utter crap in the long run. I find that I can generate enough artificial belief in the here and now that I get a little serotonin rush. And I like it.

My favorite example lately is the guy who appears to have invented a machine that creates free energy. He doesn't call it perpetual motion, but it sure looks that way.

While I am reasonably certain this story will turn out just like every other story that reminds you of this one, I can still allow myself to believe this device actually works. And if it does, the world will have unlimited free energy.

Imagine building the world's coolest electric boat powered by these devices. You could sail around the world for nothing, after you pay for the boat itself. All you need to do is pull away from the dock, program the GPS to find Italy, and go take a nap.

You'd also need a desalinization device, and some sort of automatic fishing robot for the food. When the boat's radar detects fish, the robot could drop a line and catch one automatically. Your boat would also have Internet via satellite, air conditioning, and all the comforts of home.

Your social life would be great, despite being on the sea, because you would have some sort of Internet based social web site for seafarers that tracked all of your locations from your GPS and alerted you when someone else was sailing within a few miles. Your boats would automatically bring you together for a cocktail or lunch. It would be an ideal lifestyle, until pirates killed you and took your cool boat.

Do you think the energy device will work?
